The easiest place to paddle board in Tacoma is the Ruston Way waterfront on Commencement Bay, where Parks Tacoma names Jack Hyde Park and Les Davis Pier as the best launch points for boards and kayaks. For the best scenery, launch at Owen Beach in Point Defiance Park and paddle the forested shoreline with Mount Rainier behind you. For freshwater, American Lake in Lakewood has a public launch and a swimming beach.
Tacoma works for paddling because Puget Sound wraps around the city: there’s a two-mile urban waterfront, a huge forested park on the point, and sheltered harbors and beaches across the Narrows near Gig Harbor. The trade-offs are cold water all year, tides and currents, boat and ferry traffic, and wind that can build quickly on open water. Pick calm mornings and stay close to shore.
Quick answer
- First time on a board: Ruston Way, launching at Jack Hyde Park on a calm morning.

The best places to paddle board in Tacoma
Ruston Way (Commencement Bay)
Directions
Best for: beginners and after-work paddles. Saltwater bay; usually calm close to shore.
Ruston Way is a two-mile scenic waterfront on Commencement Bay, made up of a string of smaller parks: Judge Jack Tanner Park (formerly Marine Park), Dickman Mill Park, Hamilton Park, Jack Hyde Park and Chinese Reconciliation Park. You paddle along a walking path and restaurants with views over the bay to the port and, on clear days, Mount Rainier.
Where to launch: Parks Tacoma says there are several places with water access along Ruston Way, and that the most suitable for launching kayaks or paddle boards are Jack Hyde Park at the east end and Les Davis Pier at the west end. The parks are open from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.
Good to know: Commencement Bay is a working port. Stay near the shoreline, away from shipping and the marinas, and keep an eye on afternoon wind, which can kick up chop across the bay.
Owen Beach (Point Defiance Park)
Directions
Best for: scenery and wildlife. Saltwater; can have current.
Owen Beach sits on the north shore of Point Defiance Park, a large, forested city park at the tip of the Tacoma peninsula. From the water you get bluffs and big trees on one side and views across to Vashon Island and Mount Rainier on the other.
Where to launch: Owen Beach (5605 N. Owen Beach Road) has a walk-up boat launch. It’s open from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. Nearby Point Defiance Marina (5912 Waterfront Drive) has a drive-up public boat launch and a store, and lends life jackets for kids 12 and under.
Rentals: Parks Tacoma rents sit-on-top kayaks from the Owen Beach rental building in summer: daily from June 1 to August 30 (noon to 8 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends) and weekends only in September. At the time of writing a single kayak is $30 for two hours. There are no paddle board rentals listed, so bring your own board.
Good to know: Tidal currents can run strongly around Point Defiance, so check NOAA current predictions and paddle near slack tide. The Point Defiance ferry terminal is next to the marina; give the ferry a wide berth.
Kopachuck State Park (Gig Harbor)
Directions
Best for: a quieter beach launch west of the Narrows. Saltwater.
Kopachuck State Park is on the shore of the Gig Harbor peninsula, west of Tacoma across the Tacoma Narrows bridges. Washington State Parks lists paddleboarding and kayaking among its activities, with sandy and rocky beach and a small island, Cutts Island, sitting just offshore. State Parks also points to its beach sunsets.
Where to launch: From the beach at Kopachuck State Park (10712 56th St NW, Gig Harbor). The park is open from 8 a.m. to dusk year-round, and the beach and restrooms are open all year. You need a Discover Pass: $10 for a day or $45 for a year at the time of writing. The beach isn’t ADA-accessible.
Good to know: The paddle out to the island crosses open water; only go on a calm day with a slack or gentle tide, and come back before the wind builds. Gig Harbor itself, a few miles away, is a sheltered bay on Puget Sound with a historic maritime waterfront.
American Lake (Lakewood)
Directions
Best for: freshwater and families. Flat lake, with boat traffic.
American Lake is a large lake in Lakewood, just south of Tacoma. The City of Lakewood’s American Lake Park is a 5-acre park on the north shore with a swimming beach, picnic shelter, playground, year-round restroom and a public boat launch.
Where to launch: American Lake Park (9222 Veterans Drive SW, Lakewood). The city charges a $15 launch fee at the boat launch (cards only) at the time of writing, or you can buy a seasonal pass at Lakewood City Hall. Check with the city whether the fee applies if you carry a board in rather than use the ramp.
Good to know: American Lake is popular with powerboats and water-skiers on summer weekends. Paddle early, stay near the shore, and keep out of the roped swimming area.
When to go
Puget Sound is cold all year. NOAA’s tide station at Tacoma recorded monthly average water temperatures of about 48°F in February and March 2025 and about 57°F in August and September 2025. Fresh water like American Lake warms up more in summer.
- Summer (July–September): the warmest air, longest days and most settled weather. The best time to paddle, especially in the morning.
- Spring and fall: fewer people, but cooler air and more wind and rain.
- Winter: short days and frequent storms. Only for experienced paddlers in a drysuit.
- What to wear: with water in the 50s or colder, a wetsuit or drysuit is a good idea on the Sound. Our wetsuit check uses water and air temperature to tell you what to wear.
- Tides and currents: check the tide and current tables before paddling around Point Defiance or across to islands.

Rules and safety in Tacoma
Washington treats a paddle board as a vessel when it’s used outside a swimming or surfing area. According to the State Parks Boating Program:
- Life jacket: carry a US Coast Guard–approved life jacket for each person. Children 12 and under must wear one at all times. Inflatable life jackets are only approved for people 16 and older. See our pick of the best PFDs for SUP.
- Sound device: carry a whistle, horn or bell.
- After dark: carry a light so other boats can see you.
Local rules and habits on top of that:
- Park hours: Tacoma’s waterfront parks open half an hour before sunrise and close half an hour after sunset.
- Discover Pass at Kopachuck and other state parks.
- Stay clear of ferries, shipping and marina entrances.
- Cold water: wear a leash and life jacket, and dress for a fall in.
- Give wildlife space, including seals and seabirds on the shore. Parks Tacoma asks visitors to report stranded or beached marine mammals rather than approach them.
