Dillon Reservoir is the best place to paddle board in Summit County. Launch from Dillon Marina, where you can rent a board, and paddle the shoreline with the Tenmile Range and the Gore Range all around you. For your first time on a board, Maggie Pond in Breckenridge is smaller, calmer and right next to town.
Summit County works for paddling because it has a big mountain reservoir in the middle of four towns, Dillon, Frisco, Silverthorne and Keystone, with Breckenridge a short drive south. But this is high-altitude paddling, around 9,000 feet. The water is cold enough to be dangerous all summer, and wind can come up fast. Plan for both and it’s one of the most scenic places to paddle in Colorado.
Quick answer
- First time on a board: Maggie Pond in Breckenridge, on a calm morning.
- Rentals on the big lake: Dillon Marina, where Stand Up Paddle Colorado rents boards by the two-hour session.
- Quieter corner of Dillon: Frisco Bay, with its beach and the bays to the south and east. Check the water level first.
- Somewhere less busy: Green Mountain Reservoir near Heeney, if you’re bringing your own board and water levels allow.
- Every time: wear a life jacket, dress for 40s–50s°F water and be off the lake before the afternoon wind.
The best places to paddle board in Summit County
Dillon Reservoir from Dillon Marina
Directions
Best for: rentals, big mountain views, confident beginners on calm days. Open lake water.
Dillon Reservoir, also called Lake Dillon, is the big lake you see from I-70, owned by Denver Water. Dillon Marina is on its north shore in the town of Dillon. It’s the busiest launch on the lake, with boat rentals, a marina store and a lakeside bar.
Where to launch: Launch from the Dillon Marina area. In 2026 low water closed the Frisco boat ramp, so Dillon Marina was the only launch ramp and invasive species inspection site on the reservoir. Expect more boat traffic around the ramp than usual. Paddle away from the ramp and the marina entrance, then follow the shoreline rather than crossing open water.
Rentals and lessons: Stand Up Paddle Colorado (Dillon Marina, 150 Marina Drive) rents paddle boards from late May to early September. A standard board was $60 for a two-hour session at the time of writing, with life jackets provided. You can reserve a day ahead, and walk-ups are first come, first served.
Good to know: Swimming and other water-contact sports are banned on Dillon Reservoir. Wading is allowed if your feet stay on the bottom. Denver Water’s recreation committee dropped an old rule that made paddle boarders wear a full wetsuit or drysuit, but paddle boarders are required to wear a life jacket.
Frisco Bay
Directions
Best for: a quieter launch, beach time and exploring bays. Flat water when calm.
Frisco Bay is the southwest arm of Dillon Reservoir, next to the town of Frisco. Frisco Bay Marina (267 Marina Road) has a large beach, a restaurant and, in a normal year, paddle board, kayak and canoe rentals. From here you can paddle to Giberson Bay and on past Sentinel Island toward Heaton Bay.
Where to launch: The beach next to Frisco Bay Marina. Paid parking runs from late May to early September (10 am to 5 pm in 2026); the first 30 minutes are free, but you still have to register your plate.
Rentals: In a normal season the marina rents paddle boards for around $57 to $63 for two hours, with a paddle and life jacket included. Riders on full-size boards need to be 13 or older or over 110 lb, and there are kids’ boards for ages 7 to 12. No dogs are allowed on rental boards.
Good to know: 2026 was a very low-water year. The public boat ramp stayed closed all summer, and the marina ended all paddle sport rentals for the season early because of low water. Check the Town of Frisco’s marina page before you go. Frisco Marina also runs a free life jacket loaner station.
Maggie Pond (Breckenridge)
DirectionsBest for: first-timers, kids and SUP yoga. Flat water.
Maggie Pond sits at the base of Peak 9 near Main Street Station, an easy walk from downtown Breckenridge. It’s part of the Blue River as it starts to flow through town, and it’s small and very calm, with views of the Tenmile Range.
Where to launch: From the pond’s edge by Main Street Station.
Rentals and lessons: Breckenridge’s tourism office lists summer paddle board rentals at the pond, with life jackets included, plus private SUP yoga sessions from mid-June to Labor Day. Check GoBreck for the current operator before you go.
Good to know: The pond is small and sheltered, so it’s ideal for learning to stand up. Once you’re comfortable, move up to Dillon Reservoir on a calm morning.
Green Mountain Reservoir
Directions
Best for: experienced paddlers with their own board who want fewer people. Open lake water.
Green Mountain Reservoir is on the Blue River in the north of Summit County, near the small community of Heeney. It’s managed by the White River National Forest and is much quieter than Dillon.
Where to launch: The Heeney area on the reservoir’s west shore. The Forest Service closed the Green Mountain boat ramp for the whole 2026 season because of one of the worst snowpack years on record. Its closure notice said hand-launching non-motorized boats from shore was still allowed.
Good to know: At low water the shoreline turns into steep banks of mud and rock, so look at the launch before you unload. There are no paddle board rentals here that we could confirm. Bring your own board.
When to go
The paddling season in Summit County is short: roughly late May to September, when the marinas are open. Dillon Marina opened on May 23 in 2026, and Stand Up Paddle Colorado’s rental season ran to September 7.
- Water temperature: cold all season. After a 2024 rescue on Dillon Reservoir, the Summit County sheriff warned that even strong swimmers can have their muscles seize in 43-degree water. The water warms a little by midsummer, but not enough to make a fall harmless. Our wetsuit check will help you decide what to wear, and our guide on whether you need a wetsuit for paddleboarding explains the options.
- Wind: mornings are usually calmest. In May 2024 a sudden windstorm capsized several boats on Dillon Reservoir in the afternoon, and three hypothermic paddlers had to be rescued. Check the forecast before you go and during your paddle, and head in as soon as the wind picks up.
- Thunderstorms: afternoon storms are common in the Colorado mountains in summer. Be off the water when you see them building.
- Water levels: dry winters drop the reservoirs. In 2026 both Frisco Bay Marina and Green Mountain Reservoir lost their boat ramps for the season.

Rules and safety in Summit County
Colorado treats paddle boards as vessels. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife:
- Life jacket: every paddle board must carry a US Coast Guard–approved life jacket for each person, and children under 13 must wear one. On Dillon Reservoir, paddle boarders are required to wear one. See our pick of the best PFDs for SUP.
- Sound device: carry a whistle.
- Invasive species: CPW exempts non-motorized, hand-launched craft like paddle boards from mandatory inspection, but motorized and trailered boats must be inspected. Arrive with your board clean, drained and dry, and follow any instructions from marina staff.
A few local rules and habits on top of that:
- No swimming on Dillon Reservoir. Wading is allowed, but swimming, treading water and other water-contact sports are not.
- Wear a leash. On a big, windy lake, a board that blows away from you after a fall can be gone fast.
- Stay near shore. The shore is your safety margin if you fall into cold water.
- Dogs: Dillon Reservoir’s rules require pets to be leashed and under control. Frisco Bay Marina doesn’t allow dogs on its rental boards.
FAQ
Do you need a wetsuit to paddle board on Lake Dillon?
Not by rule any more. The Dillon Reservoir Recreation Committee added paddle boarding to the activities that don’t need a full wetsuit or drysuit. You do have to wear a life jacket, and with water in the 40s early in the season, a wetsuit or drysuit is still a smart choice.
Where can I rent a paddle board in Summit County?
Stand Up Paddle Colorado rents boards at Dillon Marina from late May to early September. Frisco Bay Marina normally rents boards too, but ended rentals early in 2026 because of low water. In Breckenridge, summer rentals are available at Maggie Pond.
